Credit toward CERB repayment debt available to eligible post secondary students
During the pandemic a number of post-secondary students received the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and, in some cases, have been asked to repay those benefits to the federal government.
The government of Canada has posted information on its website indicating that if an individual was a student in 2020 and has been asked to repay the CERB by either the Canada Revenue Agency or Service Canada, he or she may be able to get a credit towards that CERB debt. There are a number of criteria which must be met in order to be eligible for the credit, and those criteria are listed on the federal government website at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/benefits/apply-for-cerb-with-cra/return-payment/student-cerb-debt.html.
In addition, CERB recipients who may be eligible for the credit must file an application, and the online fillable PDF form for doing so is available at Form T186, Canada Emergency Benefit Remission Application. All applications will be reviewed by the Canada Revenue Agency on a case-by-case basis.
